Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- ⅓ cup bread crumbs
- 2 tsp ketchup
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder (optional, use if not doing onion in gravy)
Gravy:
- 1 small onion
- 1 tsp oil
- 2 cups beef broth
- 4 tbsp flour
- 1 tsp ketchup
- ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
Directions:
1. Caramelized Onions (Optional): Thinly slice a small onion. Cook with 1 teaspoon of oil over medium-high heat until nicely browned, about 7-8 minutes. Set aside in a bowl.
2. In a bowl, mix together ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder (if using). Divide the mixture into 3-4 equal portions and shape into patties.
3. Place the steak patties in a large frying pan with a teaspoon of oil over medium-high heat. Cook, flipping every 5-6 minutes, until the internal temperature reaches about 165°F, about 15-20 minutes depending on thickness.
4. In the same pan, whisk together flour and 1 cup of beef broth. Remove the Salisbury steak to a plate and lightly tent.
5. Pour out most of the liquid from the pan, leaving about 3-4 tablespoons. Allow the pan to cool slightly, then add 1 cup of beef broth and bring to a light boil over medium heat.
6. Slowly add the flour-broth mixture while continuing to whisk. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and salt to taste. Whisk until nicely thickened, a few minutes.
7. If using, add caramelized onions to the gravy and mix well. Add the steak back into the mixture and simmer for a few minutes.
8. Serve with mashed potatoes or as desired.
